N° 64 Shapiro Lichtervelde, officier 28.5.1944 Can. 723351/D RCAF Canadien enterré 2.8.1944, tombe 497.
* Lancaster LL 810-BQ-K took off from North Killingholme the 27th of May 1944, at 12 pm with 14 other airplanes of the 550th to bombard the Marshalling yard ROTHE-ERDE of AACHEN,
east of
the city. The target has been touched, in spite of the light mist covering the railways, during this night, following the mission's reports. Two aircraft didn't return: LL 810-BQ-K fallen to
Lichtervelde and JA 712-BQ-H fallen to Rebecq.
On May 29th 3 coffins (only 3) were transferred to Wevelgem, 2 from the crash to Poelkapelle and 1 unknown brought by Lichtervelde. It was buried in the grave N ° 472. We ignore what happened with crew members of Lancaster fallen to Lichtervelde. The identity of the servicemen interred in the grave 472 remain unknown until 2nd of August.
The register of the burials to Wevelgem contains a registration of August 2nd:
N 64 Shapiro Lichtervelde, Officer, 28.5.1944 Can. 723351 / D buried Canadian RCAF 2.8.1944, grave 497. We thus wonder in which date were buried the rests of the other crew members. We also wonder where these spoils would have stayed between May 28th and August 2nd.
In fact there is good reason to suppose that the bury of 7 victims in the cemetery of Wevelgem effectively took place on August 2nd. However, the municipal archives of Wevelgem as well as those of the RAF contain no document which could clarify this affair.
It also is to think that bodies stayed in the wrecks of the plane during several days and that they were brought out when the Germans came to look for the wreck. Spoils airmen who had probably been burned by the fire consecutive to the crash had time to decompose because it was warm in this period. The Germans will have probably gathered them and sent in one coffin or one sending on to Wevelgem. The arrangement of graves shows well that we did not know how to make of individual identification of every body.

Bonner,
